They just confirmed me for the second half of the season also, dates to follow, but it’s basically every Wednesday game that we’re home.

Heading to Petco Park to Practice for Tomorrow

12 Apr

Last night Debbie and I watched a bit of Vladimir Horowitz’s homecoming concert in the USSR in 1986. His technique and musicality is unbelievable. My favorites are the Scarlatti Sonatas, the Mozart Sonata in C k.330 and the Scriabin Etude in D# minor. That piece has a very haunting and intense melody.

On another note…

I’m heading down to Petco Park in an hour to practice for my first game of the season tomorrow. It’s gonna be a good rotation of standards, classic rock, and modern radio hits.

Potentially Nerve Wracking

1 Sep

Does this look nerve wracking to you?

I should be nervous right?

In other words,

DON’T SCREW UP THE MOST SACRED SONG IN THE COUNTRY WHEN YOU’RE PLAYING IT BY YOURSELF ON YOUR SECOND INSTRUMENT IN FRONT OF 42,000 PEOPLE.

To be honest, it’s not THAT scary. I’ve done things that have made me much more nervous in my life before. How do I reassure myself that I can do this and it’s no big deal? I cheat. Even though I have the anthem memorized, I read a lead sheet of it when I play it at the ball game. Why? Because that would be a really bad time for the power to go out in my brain.

So far, of the 4 out of 5 total times I’ll play that this year in that situation, it’s always gone well. Sometimes I totally crush it, and sometimes I just do okay. But I’ve had nothing resembling a near train wreck by any stretch. It’s nice to know that you can do something like this in a sticky situation with cameras in your face and a Friar breathing down your neck and keep your cool and have fun doing it!

One more Throwback Thursday left, September 30th.

Organ Gig: You Can’t Please Everybody

31 May

So I’ve been scouring the web looking for react to my organ playing for Throwback Thursdays. Most everything I find is in my favor. The only complaints are from people complaining about there not being ENOUGH organ. Suits me well. But I did stumble across two different Twitter posts about the exact same thing, except from entirely different perspectives. I thought it was interesting…

Question

10 Apr

Question: What could be cooler than playing with an artist signed to Universal, getting dozens of cues placed in a show on MTV, being hired to play the organ at Petco Park, getting to read the charts of one of jazz’s greatest arrangers every week, spending hours at a premier studio in Hollywood rehearsing with on of Hip Hop’s top DJs, and playing behind Xzibit and Snoop Dogg?

Answer: Having enough money to go to the dentist.
